We, the people, must save ourselves.

Please Donate to NKI via Act Blue.  We so appreciate your support and this will help us grow. Our beloved democracy is under unprecedented attack, and we watch with growing horror as we quickly slide into authoritarianism.  It seems that each day brings new assaults on our crumbling freedoms, our Constitution and the Rule of Law.  We are resisting the fear and apathy that these rapid assaults are designed to promote.  It has become clear that no one is coming to save us.

Why We Resist

Texas Republicans advance their extremely gerrymandered map

US state department stops issuing visas for Gaza’s children to get medical care after far-right campaign.  Sat 16 Aug 2025

After complaints from Laura Loomer, the US state department announced on Saturday that it would stop issuing visas to children from Gaza.  Laura Loomer is a far-right influencer close to Donald Trump who has described herself as “a proud Islamophobe”.

Love in a cold climate: Putin romances Trump in Alaska with talk of rigged elections and a trip to Moscow.  For those who feared the summit on Ukraine might resemble Chamberlain’s appeasement of Hitler in 1938, the reality was worse. Trump Backs Off Cease-Fire Demand in Ukraine War, Aligning With Putin President Trump’s break from a strategy agreed to with European allies could give Putin an edge as talks to end the fighting continue.

Trump’s Washington DC takeover is straight out of a fascist playbook

About 800 national guard troops will be deployed in the nation’s capital because, according to the president: ‘Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs’. Some States are Helping Him: Three Republican-Led States to Send Troops to Expand Guard’s Presence in D.C.

Immigration agents told a teenage US citizen: ‘You’ve got no rights’ while he secretly recorded his brutal arrest. Video from Kenny Laynez-Ambrosio, 18, puts fresh scrutiny on the harsh tactics used to reach the Trump administration’s deportation targets

Trump order pushes forcible hospitalization of homeless people

Trump’s executive order would increase hospitalization of homeless individuals with mental health and substance use disorders.

WA homeless patients have a lot to lose under Trump’s Medicaid changes, The Seattle Times. The Republican budget is going to make life even harder on Washington’s most vulnerable residents. Despite what Republicans like Rep. Dan Newhouse say, erecting barriers and forcing people who are already hanging by a thread to jump through hoops to receive life-saving care will do enormous harm

What Resistance Looks Like

NKI held a “Stop the Trump Takeover Rally”
On Saturday, August 16th, at George’s Corner in Kingston, North Kitsap hosted a very successful rally. A crowd of around 100 resister sisters and brothers lined the highway with signs and cheers. A vast majority of drivers supported us with honks, smiles and thumbs up. Watch a FB Reel here  and more pictures here.
Resistance events are planned for Labor Day on September 1st and a Walk Against ICE on September 13th. Find more information below in Upcoming Events.

Voting rights advocates in Texas are gearing up to fight redistricting and gerrymandered maps

Republicans in Texas won’t let this Democrat leave the state Capitol without a police escort but our hero, Texas State Rep. Nicole Collier,is refusing to comply.

LTE in Kitsap Sun from Kitsap Activist Peggi Erickson
Columnist’s advice on Gaza is all wrong

“I was appalled to read the column published in the Kitsap Sun on August 13, ‘Israeli control of Gaza is path to peace’) by right-wing American Enterprise Institute ‘scholar’ Daniel Samet, claiming that the only way forward for Palestinians is to let Israel take over Gaza.”

WA GOP Sen. John Braun challenges Gluesenkamp Perez for Congress

Rep. Randall pursues legislation to reinstate DEI policies at national parks

The message Democratic voters delivered in Washington’s primary, Gorge News Center

The results are in and the message is clear – voters want Democrats who will fight back against Trump’s disastrous policies. When we show our policies in action and make people’s lives better at the state level, we can win more elections.

WA sues Trump administration over lost climate funding, The Seattle Times

Attorney General Nick Brown launched a new lawsuit this week to claw back more than $9 million in Congressionally-approved funding to train the next generation of climate scientists. AG Brown has sued the Trump administration more than a dozen times to defend Washingtonians from the Trump administration’s lawless overreach.

What We Can Do
The most important thing is to DO SOMETHING

Sign our Right to Sue the Federal Government Resolution to give Washington State residents a meaningful remedy for violations of their federal constitutional rights.

42 U.S.C. § 1983 allows persons whose constitutional rights are violated by State “actors” to sue for damages, but no statute exists to allow Washingtonians to pursue such claims against federal “actors”, AKA the Trump Administration. We are requesting such a law at the State level. See the full text of the Resolution here. This resolution will be presented, with all signatures, to the Poulsbo City Council and Mayor of Poulsbo next month. Be a part of making Washington a safer place for all of us!  To sign your name in support, click here.

Fight the Redistricting Coup
DEADLINE: Aug 26 • 7:00am
Contact Governor Ferguson and demand that he commit to exploring responsive redistricting with urgency. Republicans gerrymander red states to hell, and Democrats must respond. Here’s the hard truth: Unilateral disarmament isn’t strategy — it’s surrender.

Keep NASA satellites – Orbital Carbon Observatory
DEADLINE: Oct 1 • 11:00pm
The Trump administration has asked NASA employees to make plans for ending at least two major satellite missions that collect data on planet-warming greenhouse gases. Contact our senators to ask them to call NASA Acting Director Sean Duffy before Congress to address the future of these missions.

Attorney General’s Office, Data Privacy Survey
DEADLINE: Oct 1 • 11:00pm
To support Washington State’s lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding the transfer of Medicaid data to law enforcement, please take a survey from the state Attorney General’s office regarding your experiences and feelings regarding data privacy.

Call your members of Congress to Support the Joint Termination Resolution

Support Representative Raskin and Senator Van Hollen’s Termination Resolution. Trump declared a crime emergency in DC and is putting military personnel on the streets in an authoritarian show of force. Representative Jamie Raskin and Senator Chris Van Hollen are pushing back with a joint resolution to terminate Trump’s emergency declaration. We need as many elected officials as possible to join them and stand up against Trump’s power grab! We have to stop Trump’s armed takeovers here, before he spreads them to the rest of the country. Call your members of Congress
